Premiership for M2's

Congratulations to the Sydney Uni M2 team after their win 8-1 against Wests last Saturday in the Grandfinal.

The Lions started the game on a mission against the minor premiers with a controlled and patient 1st half seeing them lead 7-0 and giving Wests no real opportunities in attack.

The second half continued in the intense struggle with the Lions dominating the opposition in defense but unable to convert some opportunities in attack.

The win was a complete team effort with Ben Zonaras in goals bringing off some marvelous saves to back up the fabulous work of the field players.

This win should see the club once again retain the 1st Division Mens club championships title.

Sydney Uni under 20's win Silver medal in State Championships

Congratulations to the Sydney Uni Col Smee squad (see team list below) and coaches Jahangir Shageav and Robin Randall for beating more fancied teams in winning the Silver medal at the NSW U20 Club Championships last weekend. The team represented the club magnificently combining well as a team both in and out of the water.

The Sydney Uni team were placed 1st after the round robin games - only losing the last game played after positions for the Final had already been determined. Sydney Uni had beaten the experienced Drummoyne team during the round games but then eventually lost to them in a closely fought Final 5-4. The scores were even at the end of each quarter with Drummoyne getting in front for the first time in the later part of the final quarter.

The result was particularly impressive with Sydney Uni being the youngest team represented with only Ben Turner older than 18 years and including 9 players 16 years or younger. The experience gained by the players will hold the club in a strong position for future Championships.

National Championships and Australian Youth Squad selections

Clayton Whittaker, Jeremy Davie and Stuart Buckland-Kerr, members of the NSW under 16 Blues team,   which   won the   Gold medal at the under   16 National Championships. They   defeated the WA Gold team   7 goals to 5.

Stuart and Jeremy were also chosen in the Australian Youth Train on Squad, from which the   National   Youth     team will be chosen. Ben Goldstien and Hamish Cuthill   played strongly in the NSW Watatahs team which finished a close 4th to the Qld Maroon Team.

This is a great result for these young men and demonstrated the depth of talent at the Sydney University Lions.

Congratulations to all these players

Sydney Unilions never say die spirit still alive.

Under 16 Winter final

The Sydney University Blues went down in a tense final to the formidable West’s 6-3 in the Winter series final.

The Blues put on a spirited performance overcoming a disrupted preparation to put in a brave effort against the competitions top team. Missing players they put injury, illness, unavailability and a late season dropout aside to put on a great game of Waterpolo.

Great effort from Dave Penny who took over coaching the team at the last minute and to the under 14’s who worked so hard in defence.

This topped off a great season for the club in the under 16’s division. Our two teams the blues and the gold’s finished 2nd and 3rd respectively and produced the top 5 goal scorer in the competition.

State Team Selections

Congratulations to:

Hamish Cuthill, Ben Goldstien, Stuart Buckland-kerr and Clayton Whitaker who have been selected to play for NSW in the up coming Under 16 National Championships. The   Championships will be played in Sydney from the 1st to 7th of October 2007.
